Keep Asking

Jeremiah modeled listening for us. We see that he approached God with confidence, rehearsing characteristics about who God is and how He behaves. He asked specific questions. He expressed his frustrations over things that didn’t make sense to him. He admitted his own faults and asked God to correct him when he was wrong.

God welcomes our asking too. Asking means dialogue. We don’t have to stuff our doubts. Doubts are real, and everyone has them. What is most important is what we do with them. When we doubt, it should lead us to think, study, and ask questions.

I write specific questions I have for God all the time. I write them in my Bible next to a passage I don’t understand. I write them in my journal as I pray. I once asked God why the Book of Jeremiah seems like it isn’t in order since it doesn’t flow chronologically. Not five minutes later in my daily reading I found Ecclesiastes 7:13: “Accept the way God does things, / for who can straighten what he has made crooked?” Yep. Got it God—I don’t need to straighten You out!

If God doesn’t answer right away, keep asking. Then take time to listen with the expectation that He will answer. Jeremiah wrote about the value of waiting on God:
